Can Spyro The Dragon Please Come Back?

Can Spyro The Dragon Please Come Back?

I’ll probably get some hate about this, but when rumors were flying around about a classic franchise being revealed to come to PlayStation 4 last night, my mind immediately went to everyone’s favorite purple dragon, Spyro and then getting somewhat disappointed seeing we’d get another Uncharted game as I feel like I’m the only human being in the world who hasn’t really enjoyed that series. I did play the first two games, and couldn’t get into the world, characters, or story for that matter.

I never owned a PlayStation 3, but got a decent amount of play-time at a friends place and put the games down after some time. However, I’m picking up the PS3 soon (before Xbox One, or PS4) to check out some other titles I have missed like The Last Of Us, Infamous 2 (mainly because Second Son looks so damn appealing), Killzone, and more. I’m just a little bummed that the “classic” game we’ll be seeing on PS4 is a return to the Uncharted series, with the fourth installment.

When the rumors were of a classic franchise I’d figure we’d see a return to Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon, Syphon Filter, Legend Of The Dragoon, or heck maybe even Psi-Ops. However, we get a sequel to Uncharted 3 and I’m kind of let down. Crash, Spyro, Syphon, or even Dragoon would be a system seller for me and I probably would of dumped the money on a PS4 this year, but I’m still going to wait until 2014, then maybe we’ll hear something about a classic return.

Hell, I could even be wrong about Uncharted 4 being the “classic” game, but I feel like it’s the one the rumors and hype were all about. Then again, the rumors did mention stuff about space, so maybe Uncharted wasn’t the game at all, and we’ll see something revealed in the next few days. Then again, if the whole space thing is a true doesn’t that mean Spyro would be out of the question too? Unless, we get like a super space-y Spyro game that involved the beloved dragon hopping and traveling from different planets, dimensions, universes, etc. I feel like that would work out wonderfully for the series.

Imagine, booting up this Spyro game and having a story that involves universes collapsing, and merging together with Spyro being set out to save multiple universes from collapsing in on themselves. I dunno, it probably sounds like a better idea in my head than it does on paper. but, most of my childhood memories with video-games involved that loveable, purple dragon. My first PlayStation game I ever owned was Spyro The Dragon, and I loved that game. Played it hours on end, and was overjoyed when I finished it.

Then came along Ripto’s Rage in 1999, and immediately won me over as one of my favorite games of all time, and I had such a blast with this game, much more than the original Spyro game. Never finished this one sadly, got up to the Ripto boss fight and my younger, childish self got grumpy and snapped the disc in half. I was quite immature, and never realized that I had broken something expensive until my mother found out, and refused to buy me video-games again for a long time.

Now that I’m in my twenties I often think about venturing back to Ripto’s Rage, and finishing that game once and for all. I still have my PlayStation, and still have my memory card (which was a bust of Lara Croft). I’d have to find a copy of Ripto’s Rage somewhere, I guess I’ll venture over to good old Ebay after this and see what’s up.

Then in 2000 my favorite Spyro game of all time, and one of my most beloved titles of all time was released. This game was Spyro: Year Of The Dragon, and too me the game was gorgeous and the best looking game I had ever played, and never thought graphics would get better than this. I was about ten years old when I got my hands on the game, and luckily my grandmother bought this game for me, after my mother refused to buy me games (even though she bought me Heart Of Darkness a few months prior, which was a pretty dark and grisly platformer that released in ’98). I never finished Year Of The Dragon, and after putting a year of play into it, the Gamecube launched and my interest in video-games shifted to other consoles, and other games and I never went back to Year Of The Dragon. I still have the game sitting in my room somewhere in near immaculate condition, and I’d like to revisit it sometime, but keep putting it off to play games I’ve missed on this past generation of consoles.

It should also be known that YOTD was the last Spyro game I’ve ever played, and haven’t touched one since. I’ve been considering getting The Legend Of Spyro: Dawn Of The Dragon on Xbox 360, but I haven’t heard good things about the game, and would rather not taint my fond memories of the Spyro series.

But, that doesn’t stop me from wanting to see a return to Spyro, and a space setting would totally be the bomb in my eyes. Hopping through other dimensions, saving planets, and taking out aliens, futuristic robots, dinosaurs would be awesome. Heck, you could even add a time-travel element and that alone could probably make it seem like a “spacey wacey” game (shameful Doctor Who reference, I apologize).

What about you internet? Would you like to see a return to the Spyro franchise (not including Skylanders)? And, do you think a space theme/setting could work for a narrative, and for the game itself? I’d love to hear what you guys have to say on this, and maybe even toss up some classic Sony franchises you’d like to see return, and as exclusives for the PlayStation 4.

I absolutely LOVE spyro, and for a long time now, I have wanted him to make a comeback. He really needs his own game again, Spyro Year of the Dragon is one of my, if not, my most favourite game of all time. Not that I don’t like Skylanders though, because I think Skylanders is hella fun. You’d argue that you have to keep buying figures but you don’t have to, to be able to complete the game. But it’s obvious skylanders isnt about spyro, in fact he’s pretty much just a guest character now, so I’m crossing my fingers for a future spyro game.

Hell to the yeah! I bought the first 3 spyro games this year on Vita and 100% them all, they still hold up quite well.

I love your idea for Spyro. A “Spyro Galaxy” so to speak. I would love to see classic Spyro return in some form. Tight controls. Tight gameplay (fire or charge options made enemies feel like puzzles.) The muuusic!

I should point out Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare looks and plays oddly familiar to Spyro. I noticed it when I was watching a lets play. Then the player said it themselves seconds later coincidentally. Then my dad said it when I brought it home, check it out…

I have a notebook filled with what if Spyro games! So Spyro vs the universe would be awesome!
when you get your ps3, go to the store! All Spyro games only cost 5 dollars each.
Riptos Rage will always be my favorite

I would love to see Spyro return! I’ll probably be the first to admit that Skylanders killed Spyro and the last good Spyro game was Dawn of the Dragon. If you are still considering picking up Dawn of the Dragon, I suggest playing A New Beginning and The Eternal Night first because DotD is a continuation of the story. You might get confused like I did because I never finished Eternal Night. However, you won’t regret playing it and it is the best Spyro game since Year of the Dragon in my opinion. Have fun and happy gaming!
